Postnatal Doula Support

As a new parent it is important that you feel confident, reassured and able to follow your instincts to be the parent you want to be. Just as in birth, being informed and unconditionally supported enables you to feel in control as you explore the adventure that is parenthood.

In days gone by, extended family and friends in your community would provide continuous support after birth. Unfortunately, families have become more scattered geographically and we are less involved in the communities where we live. This essential support has diminished to a point where new mothers and parents can feel extremely isolated. In addition to this, modern society creates far greater pressure to look and behave a certain way, within impossible timeframes. Postnatal doula support brings this community back to you.

Follow your instinct

What you want from postnatal doula support is very personal and specific to your circumstances but my role is, first and foremost, to nurture you as you start your new life with a newborn. You may choose to only have a postnatal doula, or use a doula for pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period.

What do you need?

I can’t provide a rigid description of what I will do as your postnatal doula because only you know what you might need. Every element of care is tailored to you and your family. For some families, I have started support within days of birth. But, for others, my support has been needed a little later down the line.

Whatever the birth was like, you may want to debrief and talk with someone who can just listen without judgement. In addition, if there has been any negative experiences, or traumatic feelings arise, I can provide support when the time is right. As part of your physical and emotional postnatal recovery we can explore ways to create a rhythm for taking things at your own pace and I can signpost you to other sources of support. The volume of variety of advice and information that you receive after having a baby is overwhelming to say the least. I can help you navigate it all, guiding you through what information is available. We all parent differently, you will be empowered to follow your own instincts. I can provide support and guidance with whatever feeding choices you make.

Managing your world

In the early days and weeks the most important things is being with your baby, bonding and building relationships. Whatever your questions, together we can explore the options and find answers that fit you and your world. Whether that is feeding, sleeping, baby care, baby wearing, bonding…the list is endless. I will help you to understand what your baby needs as they develop, and, as a result, how you can manage your world around them. Sometimes it’s the little practical things that make the difference. Such as, the errands, light housework, preparing you or your family a nutritious meal, entertaining an older sibling. Company in parenthood can build a world of confidence, whether that’s joining you at a baby group or accompanying you to an appointment

Most importantly, postnatal doula support is about giving you the confidence to be the parents you want to be.
